Having spent 30+ years in theatre and performance venues I've seen lighting evolve from sculptured units to a plastic clad products. In a similar way that car design has evolved lighting fixture tend to now come from the same mold.
It is important to preserve what is still left. Far from consigning them into a museum or approach is to make them useful again. In some cases this means modifying them to fit into modern spaces. After all a 5KW light is not well suited in a 30'x 30' living room!
